Prof. Hong-Cai Joe Zhou from Texas A&M University and Prof. Peng Cheng from Nankai University had a visit of science department by the invitation of Prof. Daofeng Sun on the morning of July 6th. They also gave the research reports titled with “Stable MOFs for Application” and “Lanthanide Molecular Materials: Ln-SMMs and Ln-MOFs” respectively. Several “Thousand Youth Talents” researchers who were PHD students or post-doctoral fellow of Prof. Zhou’s group attended the seminar as well.
Prof. Zhou’s report was aimed to the synthesis of stable MOFs materials for the practice application. Several series of microporous and mesoporous MOFs material with ultra-high stability were synthesized by the direction of Topology guidance and structure designation. These materials can be used in the field of bio inspired, catalysis and sensor. Prof. Zhou also gave his advice on writing and submission of research papers.
Prof. Cheng’s report was focused on the magnetic properties study of lanthanide element (Tb，Dy，Ho，Er，T and Yb). Prof Cheng’s work is to control and adjust the magnetic properties by tuning the free radical system (magnetic anisotropy), positional isomers, magnetic coupling (internal / molecular), ligand field (coordination number, metal center symmetry, ligand) / stacking pattern and the chosen of solvents. Prof. Cheng also answered the questions of students after the report.
Hongcai Joe Zhou graduated from Texas A&M University with a Ph.D. degree in 2000.At TAMU he was the George W. Kunze Prize winner; his Ph.D. advisor was Dr. F. A. Cotton. He then spent two years at Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. R. H. Holm before joining the faculty of Miami University in 2002. Professor Zhou's awards include a Research Innovation Award from Research Corporation in 2003, an NSF CAREER Award in 2005, a Cottrell Scholar Award from Research Corporation in 2005, the 2006 Miami University Distinguished Scholar - Young Investigator Award, and the 2007 Faculty Excellence Award from Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.Dr. Zhou and his research group moved to Texas A&M University in the summer of 2008. He is currently an Associate Editor for the ACS journal Inorganic Chemistry. He was appointed a full professor in 2008, a Davidson Professor in Science in 2014, and a Robert A. Welch Chair in Chemistry in 2015.
Prof Cheng was born in February of 1964. He received his bachelor degree (1985), master degree (1991) and doctor degree (1994) from the chemistry department of Nankai University. He was promoted to the full professor at 1996 and work at National research center of France and Texas A&M University as visiting scholar and post-doctoral fellow respectively. Now Prof. Cheng is the professor of Chemistry and the head of Bolin College. He won the Second Grade Award for the State Natural Science Award of China in 2003 and hold Cheung Kong Professorship from the Ministry of Education of China in 2007. His research is focused on the function coordination chemistry, molecular material chemistry and bio-inorganic chemistry.
