On July 3rd, professor Shu Qiwang from Brown University was invited to give a report in College of Science, named “High order numerical methods for convection dominated problems”. The report was held by professor Li Weiguo.
Professor Shu firstly gave a review of the history of the current numerical computing methods widely used in hydrodynamics and computing mathematics. Then he gave an brief introduction of the advantages and limitations of these methods. He suggested that we start our study from the easy part and then the difficult. At the end of the report, professor Shu gave detailed answer to the questions from the attendants.
Professor Shu Qiwang had a series of highly internationally approved work that is innovative. He had over 300 publications on 1stclass journals that are widely cited. He was awarded the In 1992 he received theNASA Public Service Group Achievement Awardfor the pioneering work in Computational Fluid Dynamics as part of the ICASE algorithm team.In 1995 he received the first Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 2004 he has been listed as an ISI Highly Cited Author in Mathematics by the ISI Web of Knowledge, Thomson Scientific Company. In 2007 he received the SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering (SIAM/ ACM CSE Prize)for the development of numerical methods that have had a great impact on scientific computing, including TVD temporal discretization, ENO and WENO finite difference schemes, discontinuous Galerkin methods, and spectral methods (from the prize citation). See SIAM News Article. In 2009 he was selected as one of the first 183 members of the inaugural class of Fellows of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). In 2012 he was selected as one of the inaugural class of Fellows of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). In 2014 he was an invited 45-minute speaker in the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Seoul.
